White Ridge Architecture were engaged by Cameron Homes to undertake design concepts to convert an extant but obsolete planning consent into scheme of residential development.
The proposal was initially
met with mixed feelings amongst local residents yet Cameron Homes continued to work
tirelessly in an attempt to alleviate their concerns. We provided reassurance
that the proposal would be of the highest quality that would not only retain
the existing lakeside and leisure walks but also enhance the area and provide a
sustainable development on vacant land that would add to the vitality of
the existing marina facility.
Having gained a planning consent based on the original
commercial footprint new concepts were designed
to provide an arrayed view across both the lake and also the existing marina. This
approach maximised the opportunities the site presented by forming balconies
and private outside space. The dual aspect design of the building also created an
opportunity to utilise subtle changes in materials to provide a delicate
balance; a more traditional styling and palette of materials is used to
reflect the existing marina context yet to the east refined changes offer
a more contemporary feel to the western lakeside elevation.
The outside spaces were also critical in achieving the
overall success and functionality of the development. Tree planting
between the apartment buildings continues to soften the scheme whilst still
provide glimpses of the lakes beyond where the subtle demarcation between
public and private realm retain lakeside walks yet also offer delightful outside
space.
